About National Horseracing College
The residential Foundation Course is a 12-week or 16-week entry-level training programme that is open to everyone aged 16+ from the UK and overseas. The Foundation Course is the starting point for those completing full-time education. No academic qualifications are required and learners can follow either a riding or a non-riding pathway.
The Foundation Course is tailored to accommodate those with no previous horse experience through to those with considerable horse experience but limited or no racing experience.
Upon successful completion of the Foundation Course, learners are secured a six-week work placement in a racehorse trainer’s yard in England. There are over 400 racehorse trainers in England and the placement is chosen and secured in consultation with the learner and their family. It is anticipated the work placement will, after six-weeks, become a permanent, full-time, paid position where learners will be employed as a Racing Groom. The opportunity to progress onto a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship (Racing) will also present. Accommodation is typically provided along with employment in a racing stable.
